Making Great Smoothies

Using sugar in smoothie recipes sort-of takes away from the natural goodness that a smoothie represents. When at all possible, try the natural fruit sweetness without all the additives before judging how good your smoothie tastes. If it isn’t the way you want it, then by all means, add what it takes to tempt your tastebuds. Many people opt-out for Splenda in place of sugar but you may want to try Stevia instead. You can find that at health food stores.

You can use about any thing for liquid. Whole, skim, 2%, 1% low-fat, natural juice, ice, or any of the milk substitutes such as lactose free soy, or rice milk. Try adding a bit of apple juice to any smoothie you make. It provides a fresh taste you just cannot beat.

What ever you do, make sure it is blended smooth. If you have used ice, make certain there are no ice chunks. You may like your smoothies thick or thin. I like them a bit thicker. That is mainly why I use ice a lot when making mine. I am not especially diet turned so I tend to use whole milk and some times half and half. Wow! What a rich, delicious smoothie that makes!

The great thing about a smoothie is that fact that you can be as creative as you like. Add this, take away that, and still, you have a great smoothie. Experiment, have fun. See what you can come up with. #1 rule: get yourself a good blender!
